Arlin, developed by KSU and released exclusively to Farmer Direct Foods, is one of the highest yield potentials available. It is a semi-dwarf hard white winter wheat with moderate disease tolerance and has the earliest maturation of the white wheats. Arlin is best adapted to western Kansas and Oklahoma, west of US-281 and south of K-4 highways, and to the panhandle of Texas. Farmer Direct Foods has also grown it successfully in other areas. Since it tends to break dormancy quickly in warm weather, it can be susceptible to freeze damage. In areas of high humidity, sprouting can occur.
Oro Blanco, released by AgriPro to Farmer Direct Foods, is a hard white winter wheat with good irrigated and dryland performance. It is a semi-dwarf with medium maturity, excellent straw strength, and good test weight patterns. While not immune to leaf rust, its protection is better than either Rio Blanco or Arlin. Oro Blanco has some sprout tolerance.
Burchett is a hard white wheat developed by Agri-Pro. It is adapted to the western plains primarily due to its leaf rust susceptibility. It has an excellent yield record, good test weight patterns and very good sprout tolerance. It has good straw strength and can be grown on dryland or irrigated.
Prairie White is a hard white wheat strictly adapted to the high plains because it is susceptible to preharvest sprouting. It is also developed by Agri-Pro. It has good straw strength and can be grown on dryland or irrigated.
Baker's White is a hard white wheat by Agri-Pro and adapted to the western high plains but can be grown in the west central areas as well. It has a pretty good leaf disease package. Yields are very competitive. It has good straw strength and can be grown on dryland or irrigated.
Betty is a sib selection from the cultivar Jagger. It is similar to Jagger in its disease reactions with the exception of leaf rust where it is slightly more susceptible. It has improved winterhardiness, is taller, 5 days later in maturity, and does not break dormancy and grow early in the spring, when compared to Jagger. It yields comparably to Jagger. It is best adapted to central and western Kansas.
Heyne is a medium maturity, similar to 2137, hard white wheat with good disease resistance. Heyne is best adapted to central Kansas east of US-283 and west of K-177. It is aluminum tolerance, good grazing characteristics, and is susceptible to pre-harvest sprout in eastern regions.
Trego is a hard white winter wheat adapted especially for western Kansas dryland fields. It yields higher than all other red and white wheats available. Trego must be well fertilized for use in bread flour.
Intrada is a hard white winter wheat developed and released by Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station. It is a medium-late maturing, awned, semidwarf variety and intermediate in timing of first hollow stem stage. Intrada has high test weights and competitive yields.
Lakin is hard white wheat developed and released by KSU. Its performance has been equal to that of Trego under dryland and irrigation in Southwest Kansas. It is a medium maturity semidwarf with good winter hardiness. Lakin has effective levels of resistance to stem rust, wheat streak mosaic, silbox mosaic and barley yellow dwarf. Also needs increased fertilization.
Avalanche is a hard white wheat released by Colorado State University and marketed by the Colorado Wheat Research Foundation. Avalanche is a sister selection to Trego originating form the KSU-Hays breeding program. In Colorado dryland trials Avalanche has been slightly lower yielding than Trego, equivalent to Akron, and superior to Prairie Red. In Colorado irrigated trials, Avalanche has performed well showing better straw strength than Trego, similar to Lakin. In Colorado trials, Avalanche has shown very high test weight, good stand establishment and fall growth characteristics, and 2 days earlier heading date than Trego.
